Let's pray for Sunita William's safe return

UPDATE : Shuttle ends mission with California landing. The U.S. space shuttle Atlantis touches down at Edwards Air Force Base, California June 22, 2007.

Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams is preparing to return home on Thursday after a 194-day record in space. Cloudy skies and thunderstorms are delaying this return in Florida, US. As informed by NASA, the shuttle that blasted off to fetch Sunita Williams and install new solar power panels aboard the International Space Station has enough fuel and supplies to stay in space through Sunday.

Williams has been replaced at the station by American astronaut Clayton Anderson, who is scheduled to stay aboard the outpost until October. And it is because of her Indian origin that this shuttle mission attracted considerable interest in India. At the time of the launch, her uncle, aunt and cousins in Ahmedabad were glued to the television. She says that she learnt a lot from Kalpana. Just being with her was great fun. Kalpana had a lot of different interests. One of the interests was in Indian music. And they both used to listen to Indian classical music together, informs her father.

Priests, teachers and students at a Haryana school, the alma mater of deceased astronaut Kalpana Chawla, are praying for the safe return of Indian American Sunita Williams from space on Thursday night.

Sunita Williams is another woman astronaut who has touched stars. Let's pray for her safe arrival back to home ! Long Live Sunita Williams !

1. Sunita Williams is not an Indian. She was born an American and is half Slovenian - her mother is Slovenian. Her father acquired American citizenship in 1964 and she was born in 1965.
2. While I appreciate her achievement as an individual, as an Indian I have no emotions on her achievement.
3. It is a sad reflection on our psyche - this need to claim glory by an association however tenuous. By the same logic, the English should keep beating their chest on every achievement of the Americans since they were the original settlers of America.
4. Even American TV is not focussing as much on the Atlantis landing as are our News channels.

Dr. Deepak Pandya, her father, is a famous neuroanatomist. Her roots on her father's side go back to Gujarat in India and she has been to India to visit her father's family. She is of Slovenian descent from her mother's side.

She took to the International Space Station (ISS), a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a small figurine of Ganesha and some samosas. Totally reflective of Indian genes and behavior.

Btw, it is not about being an Indian or American. We should just be proud of her achievements as a woman astronaut. It is surely a point of great inspiration for both - the Indian and American youth.

For working in NASA you need American citizenship. Even if an Indian goes to US and thinks of joining NASA, he has to obtain a US citizenship. We can't do anything about it! ISRO is not developed enough to send astronauts in space. But surely it will attain great heights in the near future.

My comment I thought was very clear - "....appreciate her qchievement as an individual."

She did not go as an employee of NASA. Please understand that Sunia Williams is A BORN AMERICAN CITIZEN.
She not only took samosas she also took Slovenian sausages. I suggest you check some Slovenian blogs and TV channels to see if they are making the same brouhaha about this.

As an Indian what is the pride in an American citizen flying in an American ship built by American technology?
Your blog says:Sunita Williams is another Indian who has touched stars. Let's pray for her safe arrival back to home ! Long Live Sunita Williams !

She is not an Indian....and while I don't mind praying for the safe return of everybody on the shuttle what reason is there for sending out special prayers for Sunita Williams?
I suggest you spend more time in praying for the great heights that you hope ISRO will achieve.

yes, I agree with you ! I have changed the post a little...

Of course my prayers are with ISRO and will always be.

"As an Indian what is the pride in an American citizen flying in an American ship built by American technology?"

Hi Varun...Its good to see another blogger who wrote about the same topic...About the achievements made by Sunita Williams, who is an Indo-American. Its not about being an Indian or American, its about the achievement made by a woman. our president told us to dream. This woman did the same thing some long time back, and she reached there..Its a lesson to all, who wants to achieve something in their life... Hi, Friend

Kalpana Chawla 7 March 1962 – 1 February 2003 was an Indian-born American

astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist. She was one of seven crewmembers

lost in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
She died a hero and a role-model for many young women, particularly those in her

hometown of Karnal where she periodically returned to encourage young girls to

follow in her footsteps. Her brother, Sanjay Chawla , remarked "To me, my sister is

not dead. She is immortal. Isn't that what a star is? She is a permanent star in the

sky. She will always be up there where she belongs."
